I’m ready for the inevitable discussions about women in slutty Halloween costumes. Celebrities draw a lot of ire, so I chose Paris Hilton as someone I thought could really use my help this Halloween, or so I thought.
I don’t have a problem with any costumes in the right time and place and if they are done well. Heidi Klum’s costumes are not slutty because they are inspired and well executed.
Paris’ costumes are cheap, fluffy or slutty mostly because they are boring. Why bother changing costumes every year when you look the same in every single one?
The blue bunny costume is better because it reminds me of the 70’s, but Paris still looks like the same vanilla cupcake with different coloured frosting.
Even in a Warrior Princess costume, Hilton shows no thought for the character and comes off wishy-washy.
Kylie Jenner pulled off a very sexy Warrior Princess not just because of the cosplay grade costume, but look at her attitude in the pose.
Here Hilton has all the money and connections to pull off a 60’s sci-fi sex kitten Barbarella, but there is no grittiness or humour like with Jane Fonda in the movie.
A costume is a disguise and an expression of your Other self. Where you arrive at an event and people don’t recognize you.
Then it occurred to me that Paris’ net worth is $100 million, not from her family, but from her own work. What she succeeds at, and accounts for her fan base and her income, is self determination and branding.
She looks the same in every photo because it is her brand. Her brand equals income and allows her to travel, do charitable works, hang out with cute baby animals, enjoy the company of her dogs and to make music.
I’ve decided that Paris Hilton does not need my help after all and that I should take a lesson from her about costumes and about branding. So much for being fluffy.
