I’ve always been fascinated by fairies. Growing up I believed them to be good creatures, perhaps because I was a Sprite and being kind was the Brownie code of conduct. It wasn’t until I watched several movies like Legend and Labyrinth that I understood that fae folk were actually aloof and mischievous, and sometimes outright nasty.
At 56, I am parenting again and that means a hard right for me. It means I have to be the responsible adult again instead of the eccentric Grammie that fills children full of strange ideas and sugar and sends them home. Where my granddaughter and I call a truce is costume play, especially when she agrees to model for my web store FeeFiFoFun and my blog Off the Porch. We both love the drama, the set up, choosing the products and location, then tweaking the graphics for social media.
YOU ARE LOVE is a series of photographs where I blend ready-made products, recycled or DIY clothing and accessories. Most of the costume products come from my own store, but I recently found an amazing used dress at a fantastic new resale store, Kid to Kid. It is a chain that’s doing it right.
Brent and his team run a tight ship at the Mississauga Kid to Kid location. It always feels great to give and take quality items recycled items, but it’s the staff and location that shines. The staff are friendly and efficient. The store is clean and well laid out by size and colour blocked. They pay cash for your goods or you can leave it as a store credit. So far I have spent the credit on sweaters, shoes and shorts.
Two weeks ago, I posted the YOU ARE LOVE #1 ~ Cleopatra. My inspiration for #2 ~ The Fairy came last week I spotted a gorgeous purple dress in Kid to Kid’s dress-up section. Made in the U.S. by a dance wear specialist, I scooped the dress for only $12.
Paired with our fairy head wreath, made by ELOPE, and wings made by Angela of Fancy Fairy, we set up my office as a fae glen. It took about an hour to set up and shoot, playing all the while with creatures, feathers, bird’s nests and other fae fun.
I absolutely LOVE the shot we chose. It shows all the products at their best and I was able to capture the impish, and many times mischievous, qualities of my granddaughter.
